Start by heading east on State Highway 14Mt Vernon St toward Water St. Use the two left lanes to turn left to merge ontoUS-65 N toward Springfield. Continue on US-65 until you get to exit 100. Nixa is known for its Nixa Sucker Day, which was started in 1957 by Finis Gold, a former mayor of the town. It’s been a long-standing tradition ever since, and the locals will often close the schools so the kids can grab the suckers. There is also a fish fry. This event happens every year in May, and it’s a family-friendly event held on Main Street with live music and local arts and crafts. Vendors sell Sucker First and other kinds of food. All proceeds from the Sucker Day activities fund local causes, including scholarships for Nixa High School students. Several notable residents called Nixa home, including former professional baseball player Mickey Owen and pitcher Dean Deetz.
